The wooden and stucco scenery is a perfect example of trompe-l’oeil; it is still the same designed in 1585 by architect Andrea Scamozzi. It gives the appearance of an ancient street of the Greek city of Thebes, carried out for the first performance in 1585.
The scenery actually recedes only a little distance from the actors stage.
The Teatro Olimpico is still used for plays and musical performances. The theater is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto”.
